Low-key in every respect, J.J. Cale’s 1971 debut, Naturally, blew in on a soft summer breeze and not once in its 32+ minutes does it threaten to even lightly ruffle your hair. This is mellow, countrified white-boy blues-rock of the highest order. It’s no wonder fellow white-boy blues-rockers Eric Clapton and Lynyrd Skynyrd both famously recorded from this record. Even on the more upbeat tracks, the slow-flow of the boogie-shuffle rhythms ensure no one at Cale’s party’s gonna be anything but thoroughly laid back.
