I don’t really know where to start with Lowedges. It’s another recent acquisition and another album I wish I hadn’t lived so long without.
Richard Hawley’s last release, Lady’s Bridge, was my favorite record of 2007. His supporting tour, which I caught at Cafe Du Nord in San Francisco last December, was my favorite live show of the same year. Cole’s Corner, Hawley’s 2005 release, was just as good (if not better) than Lady’s Bridge and 2003’s Lowedges isn’t far behind that pair.
So, what’s this all getting at?
Well, today I’ve come to realize Richard is my favorite artist of this decade. His always-right-on lyrics, his dead-pan croon, his crushing why-the-f**k-not vibraphone and violin orchestration propelling nearly every song; this is righteous lovelorn, geezer-rock for young people that missed out on Scott Walker’s prime. I can’t get enough.
Next stop: Hawley’s first record, Late Night Final, which, appropriately enough, will be the final addition to my collection… at least until his next release! Get ready to start loving this one like I do…
