An explosion of splendidly-picked guitars, hypnotically-beaten drums, and joyously life-altering vocals, Baaba Maal’s Baayo is one of modern Africa’s most precious musical delights. I’ve obsessively replayed the disc again and again for the past few weeks, drawing a greater understanding, appreciation, and love of its depth and ambition with each listen. Every track is as satisfying as the next and, as is true of all records possessing such satisfying consistency, Baayo is a rare genuinely treat.
Although its title literally translates as The Orphan, tracks like “Baayo”, “Mariama”, and “Agouyadji” leave you feeling anything but alone.
